This ensures that both feet will pass through the mat on your way in, and most of the dirt can be trapped. Go for an acrylic mat with a rubber or vinyl backing. With these materials, you can easily shake off the dirt.

A lot of dust and dirt particles are blown into the house during the day. You will hardly notice it, but soon enough there will be layers of dust on every other surface, including the floor. Minimize the periods when doors remain open, and you'll notice a significant difference. Use window blinds to trap dust and other particles blown in through the windows. The blinds should be cleaned regularly. This tip is especially important if a family member suffers from dust or pollen related allergies.

The loose fur will be eliminated reducing the chances of spreading it around the house. The few strands that make their way onto the furniture can be wiped off with a damp cloth.
